Chart-topper, style icon, and GQ cover girl Rihanna is no stranger to statement-making sartorial choices, and she (or her stylist) is often on the bleeding edge of a trend. So, forecasters take note: Though the ball has yet to drop in Times Square, Riri might be feeling more Alice in Wonderland than Alice in Chains for 2010. At the taping of New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly over the weekend, the singer paired a lacy bustier and throwback-glam fur with opera gloves and a veiled, flower-adorned top hat from couture milliner Heather Huey. Rihanna first sported Huey’s wares in Vogue Italia, donning a black-leather studded blindfold for the September issue, and she has since added Huey’s leopard-print bowler to her personal collection. “I was surprised by the softer look they chose for her concert,” Huey told Style.com. “They actually pulled an eclectic mix of my headpieces and shoulder cages, but the flowered top hat certainly suited the occasion. Rihanna has proven over the years that she can rock a softer look as well as a hard look.” But don’t let the flowers and fur fool you into thinking Riri’s gone totally soft—those are silver claws peeking out of her pearl choker.
